Allergens, Allergens Everywhere

Government-funded research has confirmed that dog and cat allergens are most likely present in United State homes regardless of whether there is a four legged furry resident. The study was conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences NIEHS and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). A representative sample of 831 homes was taken. Researchers collected dust samples and asked the residents questions about pets.

The study found dog and cat allergen levels to be higher in households belonging to demographic groups which dog or cat ownership was more common despite whether the household had a pet. The community was found to be an important element in the spread of allergens as they are often carried on clothing.

For those suffering from pet allergies that live in pet prevalent communities, this new study is not welcomed. There is a new medication to offer relief to sufferers which is being developed. It is set to go before FDA approval soon. In the meantime, HEPA products are recommended to best clean the air in the home. It can be placed on the air heating and cooling units and comes as a filter in a vacuum. A central air cleaner can be installed on the central air unit to reduce allergens. Clean the walls and upholstery as dander often hides within.
