Assessing a Kitten's Health
When selecting a kitten, it is imperative that you make sure he is healthy. By observing the kitten, you can often detect telltale signs of potential health issues. Most healthy kittens have two modes: play and sleep. If the kitten is awake, he should be very active.
Healthy kittens should have clear eyes and no discharge or tearing. They should have their eyes fully open and be able to focus enough to follow toys. The nose should be clean and not have discharge. The kitten should not sneeze and it should breathe easily and at a regular rate. Look for clean ears that do not have black granular discharge, as this could indicate ear mites. The kitten should not be shaking its head or scratching. Check to see that the gums are pink and that there are no ulcers or sores in the mouth. Teeth are to be aligned properly and be white.
The body should show no indication of parasites and the coat should be clean with no dandruff. Look for any bald spots as this may be a sign of ringworm. Check for a good body – symmetrical and of a healthy weight. Make sure the belly does not protrude. The kitten should be fully weaned from the mother and eat well. Lumps and bumps are a bad sign.
Healthy kittens are coordinated. Occasionally, kittens will have additional toes, but this is not a problem. Pay attention to the characteristics of the breed to make sure the cat is normal.
