Going Out of Town

Whether or not to take your pet along on a trip is an important decision. Due to illness, physical impairment, or temperament, it may not be a wise idea to travel with your pet. A veterinarian can offer the best advice as to whether it is appropriate to take your animal along.

Taking Your Pet with You…

If the animal travels with you, proper preparations must be made for the journey. Make sure to pack all of the pet’s supplies, so you do not have to worry about locating them during your trip. In addition, there are many restrictions enforced by hotels, airlines, and destination countries which will need to be researched. You do not want to be surprised by a guideline of which you were unaware, so it is imperative that you take the time to make sure all requirements are met.

…Or Leaving Him at Home

If it is best to leave the animal at home, there are three alternatives: have a friend or family member look after him at home, board the animal at a kennel, or hire a pet sitter. It is ideal if the animal can be kept in someone’s home, so he does not get lonely. Make sure the animal knows the caretaker and is comfortable with them and the home environment. Get references before choosing a boarding facility. Shelters and veterinarian clinics can provide recommendations. All pet sitters should be interviewed beforehand.

Make sure to provide the caretaker a number where you can be reached, as well as the number of the veterinarian’s office. Write down all special medical and dietary needs as well.
